Rev Dr Moira Biggins

I was born in Barking, Essex, in 1955 and have always been deeply involved with the Methodist Church. I was 14 years old when the Christian faith came alive for me, and have relished the adventure of living as a follower of Jesus ever since.

From a child, I knew I wanted to work with computers, and I did that for most of my adult life. However, alongside that, I also found myself called to ordained ministry. I served fourteen years in Derby as a part-time, unpaid minister alongside doing my full-time day-job – or the “undercover work”, as I called my regular employment. I believed that what I did at work – and how I did it – was an important part of my service to God, every bit as important as doing “church work”.

I was made redundant from the day-job in 2016, and after a period of searching, became sure that God was calling me to full-time ministry in a circuit. When I heard about South Derbyshire, I was convinced it was where I should be. I have a great love for small churches that are prepared to “have a go” at mission.

I seek to encourage individuals and churches to be bold and innovative, believing that we are building God’s kingdom. When it comes to making decisions, I’m a believer in the collective wisdom of the people of God. I know that, when we work together with vision, and with confidence in God, it is amazing what we can achieve, even with limited resources.

I love to lead worship and especially communion. Putting bread and wine into people’s hands is the best thing in the world!

When I became a minister, I also became part of the chaplaincy team at East Midlands Airport. This group of people serves both staff and passengers, offering friendship and care to all, and maintaining a Prayer Room where many people experience the presence of God.

I am also the chair of Workplace Chaplaincy in Derbyshire, the organisation that places chaplains into big businesses (such as Rolls-Royce) and public-sector organisations (such as the police) across the county.

And my personal interests? Industrial history, especially anything to do with trains and trams, fascinates me. Summer holidays find me in North Wales, where there are lots of narrow-gauge railways to enjoy, and I can also indulge my love of walking. Though of course our wonderful National Forest is also a great place to walk!
